Abstract
John Wyclif has been called both the Evening Star of Scholasticism and the Morning Star of the Reformation. And, while there has been much debate regarding the exact nature and value of Wyclif’s personal contributions, the fact remains that his life presents a microcosmic picture of the religious, social, and political changes that began in the late fourteenth century, and culminated in the English Reformation.
Also, even if Wyclif’s own evolution of theological realism and evangelistic fervor did result only in what one writer has described as an “abortive reformation,” recent research is proving more and more the value of this premature beginning as the starting point for future ecclesiastical reform.
