Game of Thrones – Review of Season 3 Episode 5: Kissed by Fire

“My children, You’ve disgraced the Lannister name for far too long” ~ Tywin

This week on Game of Thrones, plots thicken and are thwarted, alliances are made, and punishment is doled out.

Game of Thrones – Review of Season 3 Episode 5: Kissed by Fire

ARYA

This week finds Arya witnessing a duel between The Hound and Beric Dondarrion. The Hound, who usually fears nothing, is taken aback when Beric battles him with a flaming sword. The Hound fears fire and it looks like Dondarrion has the upper hand but in the end, The Hound prevails and slays him. Shockingly, Dondarrion gets up after he apparetnly “dies”! It looks like his devotion to the Red God, R’hllor has paid off. Arya overhears Dondarrion talk about being repeatedly killed and how every time he comes back, he come back “a little less”. It’s an interesting conversation because you have to wonder what R’hllor can do, as Arya does, when she asks Dondarrion if his God can bring her father back – unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way but what she witnessed was still remarkable. Arya’s captors decide they will head for Riverrun where her brother Rob is biding his time. They will sell Arya to him because they need the gold.

JON

We finally see Jon onscreen for more than just a cameo appearance. He’s being continually tested by the Wildlings. They ask him for the defenses and fortifications of the Wall but trust none of his answers. They like him, but still think he’s walking them into a trap or holding back. Ygritt comes to his defense then coyly steals his sword to lure him to bed her and break his vows. It doesn’t take much arm twisting and we get the scene we’ve all been waiting for after ages of fur covered, snowy, sexual tension. As much as Ygritt wanted Jon, a part of her realises that by getting Jon to break his vows, he is more likely to get accepted by the Wildlings if they see he is attached to her.

JAMIE AND BRIENNE

Lord Roose Bolton is none too pleased that Jamie has lost his hand. Jamie is a very valuable hostage and mistreating him could compromise any chance of negotiation. High ranking captives *historically* weren’t mistreated without leave the way Jamie was by Roose’s men. Roose releases Brienne and has Jamie’s arm healed as Jamie’s arm is showing the beginnings of infection. The best part of their segment is when Jamie joins Brienne in the bath. There’s no sexual tension or anything insinuated here but Jamie proceeds to purge his soul to Brienne. It’s a very honest conversation about what really happened when he slew Aerys Targaryen. His version of events vary greatly from what most people believe happened, yet he told no one because because he knew nobody would believe him. Brienne is beginning to understand that Jamie is a lot more complex than the one-dimension jerk we saw in season one. He has many demons and he’s only willing to share them with his former captor.

KING’S LANDING

“The people are hungry for more than just food…they need distractions…A royal wedding is much safer, wouldn’t you say?” ~ Lady Olenna Redwynne

There’s plotting aplenty in King’s Landing. Cersei comes to see Littlefinger. Tyrion sees Lady Olenna Redwynne about finances for the royal wedding and Sansa continues to irritate me intensely. After all that has happened, it appears the rose coloured glasses haven’t completely come off and she’s still more preoccupied with chasing cute boys and being friends with the girl who is marrying her former abuser. She is a pawn in a nasty game of chess and she doesn’t see anything beyond the excitement of her future wedding to Ser Loras. Meanwhile, Sansa’s “beloved” beds a squire and the squires tells Littlefinger about the engagement. The squire turns out to be one of his spies and Littlefinger tries to convince her to leave. He sees his plans being thwarted and is scrambling to keep the upper hand. Tywin also doesn’t want Sansa to marry a Tyrell because she is the key of the North. He plans to marry Sansa off to Tyrion and Loras Tyrell to Cersei to mitigate rumour and keep family honour intact. Both Cersei and Tyrion are none to pleased with the news.

ROB

In a fit of rage, Lord Karstark kills the Lannister boys, Tywin’s nephew’s, as revenge for his son’s death because Catelyn freed Jamie. Rob is really losing control here. He seems to be unable to have his men listen to orders and it makes him look weak. He’s not turning out to be the Lord of the North his father was and he’s losing his men’s respect. Rob is continually paying for his mother’s poor decision to let Jamie go. To try and show he has some control over the situation, he ignores his mother’s advice and metes out a harsh punishment to the men involved in the murders: he has them all hanged and he beheads Lord Karstark himself. Things are looking grim for Rob.

The show briefly touched on other story lines, like Stannis and Dany, but they were more check-ins than furthering of the plot. This week didn’t have any jaw dropping revelations, battles or twists but it was still a greast show building up to the royal wedding. Tune in next Sunday at 9pm, on HBO for another exciting episode of Game of Thrones.
