Abstract
The role of medieval patronage of the pictorial arts and of literary works in the 12th and 13th centuries has been investigated mainly from the historical, social and cultural aspects. The role of the patron as a co-producer of the work of art, however, has only recently begun to be studied systematically. The relationships between influential patrons and the works of art they commissioned are examined here through the sculptural programs of the southern porch of Chartres cathedral and of the northern porch of the collegiate church of St. Martin in Candes. Three cycles in Chartres cathedral, each depicting the lives of the saints emphasize different modes of representation and consequently raise the question of their possible patrons.
