Abstract

This thesis represents the biographies of two thirteenth century Hungarian queens: Maria Laskaris, the wife of Bela IV coming from Nicea and Cuman wife of Bela’ s son Stephen Elisabeth. The paper furthermore compares these two cases with the established patterns of medieval queenship and examines the source representation of the mentioned queens in order to find out how much they managed to meet the established requirements.

Scholarly interest in queenship in the Árpádian period is still quite recent. Not many monographs have been published yet and they have mainly focused on the institution of queenship as such. Biographical studies of particular queens’ figures are even rarer,
