This is a Distinguished University Professorship Award Public Lecture delivered at The University of Western Ontario on Feb. 10, 2011. Dr. Russell Poole is an internationally recognized authority in medieval studies. His main interests are the Icelandic sagas, skaldic poetry, and Viking contacts with continental Europe and the British Isles. He is one of Western’s 2010 Distinguished University Professor Award recipients. The award acknowledges sustained excellence in scholarship over a career, taking into consideration the full breadth of academics including research, teaching and service to the community.
