Rare Medieval Book of Hours to Headline Manuscript Sale

A beautifully illuminated fifteenth-century Book of Hours created in Bruges will be one of the highlights of Freeman’s third annual Western Manuscripts and Miniatures sale, taking place on 9 July.

Known as the “de Saux” Hours, the manuscript was produced in the Southern Netherlands around 1460 and contains 15 half-page miniatures, 15 historiated initials, and 24 calendar illuminations. The artwork has been attributed to the Master of the Lee Hours, one of the leading illuminators active in Bruges during the mid-fifteenth century.

The manuscript forms part of a major offering of more than 65 illuminated manuscript leaves and cuttings, together with a substantial selection of complete medieval codices. The sale was curated by manuscript specialist Dr. Sandra Hindman and includes manuscripts from distinguished private collections in Switzerland and Germany.

Among the other highlights is the Missal of Jean d’Amboise, an illuminated manuscript made for Jean I d’Amboise, bishop-duke of Langres between 1482 and 1497. It is considered one of the few surviving examples of manuscript illumination produced in late fifteenth-century Champagne.

Another notable item is a richly decorated Romanesque manuscript from Lambach Abbey, almost certainly produced at the Austrian monastery, an important medieval centre of learning and manuscript production. The volume contains Origen’s homilies on Genesis and Exodus and survives in its original medieval binding, complete with the abbey’s historic shelf mark.

The sale also includes a twelfth-century manuscript by Peter the Venerable on heresy from the collection of the renowned medieval historian Giles Constable, along with an exceptional group of Romanesque and early Gothic manuscript leaves from the collection of Robert McCarthy. These feature leaves from giant Atlantic Bibles, a rare Mozarabic Spanish miniature, and works attributed to the Master of Monza.
