The study of Icelandic medieval history has become a topic of interest to scholars of diverse nations and ethnicities in the most recent decades. Books on this topic are now read and studied by scholars from Latin America to East Asia and all the places in-between, This is very different from the situation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when Icelandic history would have been regarded as a very specialised topic. Consequently, most of the works on Icelandic medieval history are only of use to those who fluent in both medieval and modern Icelandic. The aim of this book is to make this history more accessible to the general reader and students just embarking on the study of Icelandic medieval history.

While there is much research on the sagas and society of Iceland, it was needing a book to lay out the development of the island during the Middle Ages.
