Medieval Castle for Sale in England

Appleby Castle
Cumbria, United Kingdom
Asking Price: £9,500,000

Located in northern England, Appleby Castle dates back to the 12th century. It was built around 1170 by the Earl of Chester but in 1174 was captured by the King of Scotland. Soon back in English hands, the castle expanded as it became the home of the Clifford family. Between 1461 and 1485 the castle was part of the domain of King Richard III but he did not live here. Over the centuries, the castle has seen new additions and has remained in private hands. This Grade I-listed site is currently used as a hotel while hosting weddings and special events. “The castle is a unique relic from the medieval period tucked in a breath-taking landscape,” said Guy Bradshaw, senior director of sales at Sotheby’s International Realty, the agency selling the property. “It’s very suitable for a family home, but it would also be an amazing country retreat or holiday home for those wishing to escape the bustle of city life, as it’s on the edge of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.”

Appleby Castle includes the original 12th-century Norman keep known as Caesar’s Tower (the name is based on the legend that it was first built by Roman soldiers under the command of Julius Caesar), a 13th-century round tower and a 15th-century house that was expanded into a mansion in the 17th century. Sotheby’s International offers this description of the castle:

With 22 bedrooms and 19 bathrooms, the historic castle has plenty of room for hosting parties or, as is currently the case, for paid accommodation. The castle also features a 15th-century dining room with soaring ceilings, as well as a Great Hall from the same period; a second Great Hall dates back to the 12th century. As well as its many period features, the main building also features plenty of modern amenities, including a gym, a hot tub and sauna room, a games room as well as plenty of store rooms. Three external cottages form part of the walls of the inner bailey, two of which are two-bedroom, and all three of which feature open-plan living spaces, adding extra accommodation.

Besides the castle itself, the new owner would get 25 acres of land, which comes with three cottages, offices, a tennis court and fishing rights on the River Eden. Appleby Castle
