Learn about medieval cooking with five-day course

If you want to learn about how people in the Middle Ages cooked and ate, you might want to be in Newcastle this September for a five-day in-person course.

The Eat Medieval Summer School will be taking place from 4-8 September 2023. Hosted between Blackfriars, a former 13th-century Dominican friary, and Durham University’s Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies (IMEMS) it will take place in the Cookery School at Blackfriars.

The course will consist of a number of practical cookery sessions and discussions as well as a field trip to the historic 14th-century Raby Castle which houses arguably the best-preserved medieval kitchen in Britain, as well as Durham Cathedral and Library together with an opportunity to see some of its unique medieval manuscripts.

Transport and entry costs are included as well as lunches and three dinners and refreshments throughout the day. Some meals you’ll make yourself under supervision in the Cookery School whilst others will be part of the field trips, or taken in our award-winning restaurants; and all leading up to an end-of-week banquet-feast in Blackfriars ornate Banquet Hall.
