Rarely seen medieval manuscripts to be displayed at Korean art fair

The Frieze Seoul, a new international art fair, will be showcasing two privately held medieval manuscripts. Les Enluminures, a leading dealer in manuscripts, will be showing the items that are both privately held.

The first highlighted manuscript is the only illustrated copy of Bellifortis that is in private hands. One of the most important texts on medieval warfare, it shows 125 full-page watercolour pictures of machines, including rockets, life jackets, missiles, blow torches and bombs.

The second rare manuscript comes from the French royal court: the second volume of the only known illuminated copy of Julien Macho’s popular French translation of Aesop’s Fables. It is richly illuminated with sixty-six miniatures, painted around 1500 by the Master of the Parsian Entries, who was a prolific artist based in Paris.
