What makes the list of the top 10 most Instagrammable castles in the world?

An analysis carried out this year by Stokemont.com has revealed the number of Instagram hashtags the world’s most famous castles have received. It shows which ten stunning Instagram-worthy strongholds you should add to your bucket list today!

In the number one spot is Prague Castle with 667,933 hashtags on Instagram. This medieval stronghold has been a seat of power for kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman emperors, and presidents of Czechoslovakia, and it’s rumoured the Bohemian Crown Jewels are hidden deep inside.

In second place is Edinburgh Castle, a historic fortress that dominates the skyline of Scotland’s capital city. Edinburgh Castle has 581,111 hashtags on Instagram, which is over 7 times more than Romania’s Peleş Castle in 10th place.

Inspiring the design for Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella’s Castles, Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany claims third place with 390,457 snaps. While this castle has sometimes been mistaken as a medieval site, it was actually built in the 19th century.

Windsor Castle was not only the backdrop to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2018 wedding, according to Stokemont.com’s study, it is the fourth most Instagrammable castle in the world. The royal residence has been photographed 388,855 times on Instagram.

Rounding off the top five is Pena Palace in Portugal. The beautiful Romanticist castle in São Pedro de Penaferrim clocks a total of 281,193 hashtags to date on Instagram, which is bound to increase as travel becomes safe again.

Buda Castle, the historical castle and palace complex of the Hungarian kings in Budapest, has received 210,798 hashtags on Instagram. It was first completed in 1265, but most of the site today was built in the 18th century.

The Alhambra in Andalusia, Spain, was built in the 13th century by the Nasrid dynasty. This medieval palace is in seventh place, with 119,080 photographs on Instagram.

The third castle from the British Isles to make the top 10 list is Leeds Castle, with 108,475 hashtags. The present castle dates mostly from the 19th century, but its origins date back to the 12th century.

The final two castles to make this list are both in Romania. Bran Castle get its fame for being the fictional home of the vampire in Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. Peleș Castle was built by the King of Romania between 1875 and 1914 at a cost of $120 million (US) in today’s money. These two castles earned 91,616 and 78,705 hashtags apiece.
