Trade Networks and Empires: African Art’s Many Golden Ages

Trade Networks and Empires: African Art’s Many Golden Ages

Lecture by Augustus Casely-Hayford

Given at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto on December 1, 2019

Excerpt: We know we know about Nubia. We know about Egypt. We know about Carthage in the classical era. But the Berber, the Almohads, the Almoravids, and the kingdoms of Ghana and Songhai, and the great many other cultures that rose up and thrived on the western edges of the Sahara in the period of the medieval – they are much less well known, and they formed a wonderful nexus of cultures that have left us some of the most astounding cultural artifacts that the world has ever seen.

Dr. Augustus Casely-Hayford is the Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art.
