The cancellation of medieval-related events because of the coronavirus pandemic continues, with a conference and a festival being called off.
The Society for the Study of the Crusades and the Latin East (SSCLE) has decided to postpone their upcoming conference for a year. In an email sent out to participants, the SSCLE Conference Committee remarked:
The unprecedented impact of the corona virus on everyday life and the uncertainty of its outcome makes it impossible to guarantee a successful conference in June. Our thoughts are with everyone who at this moment is struggling with the virus and its effects, and we thank all of you for your patience and understanding during this time.
Their conference was due to take place in late June at Royal Holloway, University of London. It will now be taking place from 28 June to 2 July 2021, and the Conference Committee hopes that the current participants will return next year. For more details, please visit the conference website.
Meanwhile, the Chalke Valley History Festival has also been cancelled for this year. The festival, which stated in 2011, brings in thousands of history-lovers interested in everything from ancient times to the modern era.
Their statement said:
It is with very heavy hearts that we have had to pull the plug on the Festival taking place this June. Sadly, events have taken such a dramatic turn with the COVID-19 virus, that it is simply no longer possible to hold it as planned.
They also indicate that plans are now underway for bringing back the festival in 2021. Click here to view their website.
