One of the most important historians of the Anglo-Norman world, Professor Marjorie Chibnall, passed away last month at the age of 96. Her career included teaching at the universities of Cambridge, Southampton and Aberdeen, and among her honours was being a Fellow of the British Academy and appointed to the Order of the British Empire in 2004.
Marjorie Chibnall will perhaps be best known for her work on Orderic Vitalis, the 12th century English chronicler. She edited and translated the The Ecclesiastical History of Orderic Vitalis, over a thirty year period, producing six volumes published by Oxford University Press. She also produced another dozen books, including editions of The Gesta Guillelmi of William of Poitiers and The Waltham Chronicle.
Chibnall continued doing research into her 90s, with her book The Normans, being published in 2006. Her work as a historian has been of a huge benefit of to the scholarly community.
Marjorie Chibnall passed away on Saturday 23 June. A memorial service for her at the University of Cambridge is being planned for the autumn. She survived by a son and daughter, and two stepdaughters.
