‘Fit for a king’: music and iconography in Richard Beauchamp’s chantry chapel

Introduction: The Beauchamp Chapel in Warwick is a remarkable survival of 15th-century architecture, sculpture and—above all—stained glass. Well known to organologists for its detailed depictions of contemporary musical instruments, less attention has been paid to the musical notation included in the windows. While the windows have suffered from both iconoclasm and restoration, which has obscured and confused some of the musical material, there is much to be gleaned from the surviving chant and polyphony.
