Abstract
This study examines the development of independent painted portraits during the fifteenth century and the reign of Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy. It serves as an attempt to better understand the growing popularity of independent portraits amongst members of the nobility, and to determine the function that these panels may have served for their patrons. The investigation develops from the physical usage of dynastic portraits, then traces artistic developments which were influenced by changing devotional practice and which allowed the artist to assert the sitter’s presence in a manner previously unknown.
