The King’s Council and the first Protectorate of the Duke of York, 1453–1454

Griffiths, Ralph A.

English Historical Review, Vol.99 (1984)

Abstract

HARVARD UNIVERSITY (Houghton Library) fMS Eng. 751 fos. 21 iv—214*, includes a record of three meetings of King Henry VI’s council, held respectively on 30 November 1453, 5 December 1453, and 3 April 1454. Although this record, and indeed the entire Harvard volume, was written about the end of the fifteenth century, there is no reason to doubt that it is a faithful copy (apart from a few minor misreadings and incidental omissions) of what may justifiably be regarded as contemporary council minutes. These minutes are not otherwise known and together they have considerable administrative, political, and personal significance.
