Call for Papers: The Fourteenth Annual Symposium on Medieval and Renaissance Studies

The Fourteenth Annual Symposium on Medieval and Renaissance Studies
June 14-16, 2027
Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO

Submission Deadline: December 31, 2026

The Annual Symposium on Medieval and Renaissance Studies (SMRS) is a convenient summer venue in North America for scholars to present papers, organize sessions, participate in roundtables, and engage in interdisciplinary discussion. The goal of the Symposium is to promote serious scholarly investigation into all topics and in all disciplines of medieval and Renaissance studies (c. 500-c. 1700).

The 14th Annual SMRS is pleased to issue its Call for Papers. We invite proposals for papers, sessions, and roundtables. Any topic in the scholarly investigation of the medieval and early modern world is welcome. This year our organizing, optional theme is: “Virtues and Vices.”

Virtues and vices pervaded medieval and Renaissance society, from pictorial representations of Wrath or Chastity to allegorized characters in literature, from sermons to the masses to personal meditations. Notions of virtue and vice evolved over time, and every historical development in medieval and early modern society raised questions about what virtuous and vicious activity looked like in the changing currents. We therefore welcome papers in all disciplines exploring virtues and vices, construed narrowly or broadly.

The plenary speakers for 2027 are Ardis Butterfield (Yale University) and Christopher Celenza (Johns Hopkins University).

Individual papers should be twenty minutes in length. Scholars may also organize and submit full session proposals. Scholars in a session must represent at least two institutions. Scholarly organizations are encouraged to sponsor proposals for complete sessions, and organizing at least two sessions in coordination with each other is highly recommended. If you have an idea for a session but would like to make an open call to recruit papers, you may send an Open Session CFP by email to [email protected] with a proposed session title, short description, and accompanying image related to the theme. We will post Open Session CFPs on our website and advertise them through our social media channels. Those looking to join a session are encouraged to visit smrs-slu.org and submit their paper proposal to the session organizer.

The submission portal will open on November 1 at smrs-slu.org. Proposals should include a title and abstract of no more than 250 words. The deadline for all submissions is December 31, 2026. Decisions will be made by the end of January, and the final program will be published in March. All papers must be delivered in-person.
