By Tony McMahon

Pen & Sword History
ISBN: 978 1 03611 348 3

Few organisations in history have achieved as much fame, or infamy, as the Knights Templar. This book introduces you to their story, from their founding during the Crusades to their dramatic downfall.

Excerpt:

The linear history of the Templars including the many battles and plots are detailed here but alongside that runs the whispered allegations levelled against the order as well as the outlandish conspiracy theories from the medieval period to the present day. By absorbing both the history and the mystery, we get the full picture of this incredible order of knights. Armed with all the information, the reader can decide who and what were the Knights Templar.

Who is this book for?

While there are many books on the Knights Templar, few bring such a storyteller’s touch to the subject. This book offers an accessible overview of the military order, tracing its nearly two-hundred-year existence and examining how the Templars became associated with so many legends. While it cannot go into great depth on the many people and events connected to the Templars and the Crusades, it provides a good starting point to the subject and would be a good read for anyone wanting to learn more about both.

“A solid retelling of the Knights Templar story. While it covers some of the conspiracy theories that have built up around the knights in modern times, it stays on the right side of the crazy line, keeping us on track with who they were, what they did and why they were different.” ~ review by Popular History Books
