The work at hand is the translation of Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah’s Maghāzī (Expeditions), the earliest biography of the Messenger in current existence. Given its unattainability for the past few centuries, the pleasure at the rediscovery of its manuscripts and its subsequent publication cannot be understated. Its author ranks as one of the first individuals to compile reports specifically related to the sīrah. More significant, however, is the fact that it was acclaimed as the most authentic work of its genre and an authoritative source for later writings on the life of the Prophet.
Who is this book for?
The Maghāzī of Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah is one of the earliest surviving sources for the life of Muhammad and the beginnings of Islam. The surviving portion does not cover Muhammad’s entire life. It begins shortly after his migration to Medina, with the changing of the direction of prayer towards the Kaʿbah and the Battle of Badr in 624, and continues through the major campaigns and events of the Medinan period, ending with the Farewell Pilgrimage in 632, shortly before Muhammad’s death.
The discovery of a manuscript in the National Library of Tunisia has allowed much more of this work to be studied in depth. Those studying Islamic history will certainly want a copy, as will readers interested in the political and military history of early medieval Arabia.
