This collection of nine essays explores medieval literature from England and Scandinavia, bringing together studies on figures and texts including Beowulf, Sir Gawain, the wolf Fenrir and Tolkien.

Excerpt:

We are pleased to honor Shaun by sharing scholarship that not only engages deeply with the traditions of Middle English, Old English, Icelandic, Old Norse, Tolkien Studies, and more, but which also breaks exciting new ground in these fields, following Shaun’s readiness to offer controversial yet convincing views on scholarly issues.

Who is this book for?

Shaun F. D. Hughes is a Professor at Purdue University, where his research examines literature from Old Norse/Icelandic, Old and Middle English Language. These essays reflect those interests – several focus on major works of English literature, including Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and the writings of Langland. Others turn to Norse material, exploring Icelandic sagas, skaldic poetry, and mythological figures such as Fenrir.
