HarperCollins India has announced that The Chola Tigers, the second instalment in Amish Tripathi’s Indic Chronicles series, will be released at the end of August. The novel follows the 2020 bestseller Legend of Suheldev: The King Who Saved India, which introduced a fictional world inspired by episodes from medieval Indian history.
Set in the year 1025, The Chola Tigers: Avengers of Somnath takes place in the aftermath of Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni’s destruction of the Somnath temple in Gujarat. According to the synopsis, Emperor Rajendra Chola assembles a diverse group—including a Tamil warrior, a Gujarati merchant, a devotee of Lord Ayyappa, and a scholar-emperor from Malwa—to undertake a mission aimed at striking deep into Ghazni’s domain. The story moves from the Chola Empire in southern India to the Ghaznavid court, weaving together themes of unity, retaliation, and questions of honour.
Amish described the work as “an exhilarating story in which Emperor Rajendra Chola, the mightiest man of his era, orders a daring surgical strike on Ghazni in response to Sultan Mahmud’s attack on the Somnath temple.”
During an event in the southern city of Chennai, the cover of the book was unveiled by Rajinikanth, one of the most famous actors in Indian cinema.
“Amish has brilliantly reimagined our beloved legends and epics, and episodes from medieval Indian history, for millions of people across the country to enjoy afresh,” says Poulomi Chatterjee, Executive Publisher at HarperCollins India. “The new novel is vintage Amish—a sweeping historical saga that is pacy, dramatic, simmering with political intrigue and personal vendetta, and heart-rending in its scenes of sacrifice and retribution. At its heart it masterfully explores the depths of human courage and resilience, and the indomitable spirit of a nation that refuses to be broken. It’s going to keep readers spellbound until the final page, and we can’t be happier to publish it!”
Amish, a former banker and diplomat, has sold over eight million copies of his books, which have been translated into 21 languages. His earlier works include the Shiva Trilogy, the Ram Chandra Series, and Legend of Suheldev. This latter novel draws on the folklore surrounding King Suheldev, who is said to have defeated a Ghaznavid general. It was praised for its fast-paced narrative and won the Golden Book Award in 2022. Reviewers noted its role in bringing lesser-known figures from Indian history to a wider readership, while also highlighting its blend of action and historical reimagining.
