Edel Bhreathnach Wins Prize for Book on Monasticism in Ireland

Edel Bhreathnach has been awarded the 2024 James S. Donnelly Prize for Books on History and Social Sciences by the American Conference for Irish Studies for her book Monasticism in Ireland, AD 900–1250.

Praised as “a wonderfully erudite work,” the book was recognised for its depth of research and thoughtful analysis of Irish monastic life during the High Middle Ages. The prize committee noted its “nuanced assessment of the texts” and the inclusion of valuable resources such as a glossary and source introductions. One feature especially commended was the integration of material on female religious figures throughout the book, highlighting their roles within monastic communities.

Monasticism in Ireland, AD 900–1250 explores the functioning of monasteries during a period of major change and questions how “monastic” the monastic church truly was, especially in relation to the wider lay church. The book offers fresh insights into both religious practice and social dynamics in medieval Ireland.

Edel Bhreathnach is an Adjunct Professor at the University College Cork.
