Lorcán Ua Tuathail, known in English as Laurence O’Toole, was a 12th-century Archbishop of Dublin. This book presents editions of four texts about his life, two of which are also translated into English

Excerpt:

Lorcán Ua Tuathail was one of the most distinguished Irish churchmen of the twelfth century. Born the son of a Leinster petty king he entered the monastery of Glendalough as a boy, and later served as abbot there. It is, however, because of his association with the see of Dublin that Laurence has been best remembered by subsequent generations. He was consecrated archbishop of that city in 1162, a Gaelic-Irish prelate ruling over a Norse-Irish see. Laurence was intimately involved in the traumatic events resulting from the arrival of the Normans in Ireland in 1169-70: in the aftermath of these he held a unique and important place in Irish politics as a link between the Gaelic political system, represented by Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair, and the Angevin royal government, in the person of Henry II. At a time when Ireland was going through its most profound political and social change, Laurence was personally involved at the highest level.

Who is this book for?

This primary source is an invaluable asset for anyone studying 12th- and 13th-century Ireland. Lorcán Ua Tuathail played a crucial role in Ireland’s ecclesiastical landscape during the Norman invasion, making his story essential for understanding this period. Scholars of medieval hagiography and church history more broadly will also find this work highly valuable.

The Editor

Maurice Roche was a dedicated scholar with a deep passion for this aspect of Irish history. Although he tragically passed away in 2003 following an accident, his family and colleagues used his PhD dissertation to create this book—a fitting tribute to his outstanding work.
