The Crusades and the Far-Right in the Twenty-First Century: Engaging the Crusades, Volume Nine

Edited by Charlotte Gauthier

Routledge
ISBN: 9780367470432

The five essays in this collection explore how the Crusades continue to serve as a powerful historical symbol within Far-Right extremism. This influence is evident in acts of terrorism, political movements like Brexit, and even in cultural phenomena such as the Assassin’s Creed video games.

Excerpt:

As nationalist and far-right ideologies have gained adherents in Europe and the Americans, and as the academy engages in a welcome debate over how the crusades are taught, understanding how ideologues have misused the crusading past for their own ends is more important than ever. This volumes, as so much of the present debate on crusades pedagogy within the academy, is driven by two underlying questions: what motivates individuals on the far-right to the appropriate the crusading past for ideological service in the present, and how might crusades historiography challenge or mitigate its own misuse?

Who is this book for?

This collection of essays will interest scholars of medievalism and the Crusades. It deals with topics that most medievalists would not like to think about – how in the darker corners of the world, people have been distorting the Middle Ages to further their radical beliefs.

The entire Engaging the Crusades series, now approaching its tenth volume, has been a welcome collection of articles looking back at how the Crusades has remained a cultural touchstone for many in the modern world. To learn more about the series, check out this piece from Mike Horswell.
