Oathbreakers: The War of Brothers That Shattered an Empire and Made Medieval Europe

By Matthew Gabriele and David M. Perry

HarperCollins
ISBN: 978-0-06-333667-4

An exploration of the Carolingian Empire’s collapse into civil war, focusing on the pivotal Battle of Fontenay in 841. This decisive conflict reshaped the political landscape of Europe, leaving a lasting legacy.

Excerpt:

To understand how the sons of Louie the Pious arrived at a civil war that no one had expected yet everyone had seen coming, we need to begin our story at the moment the Carolingians took power and to conclude with the legends that arose – largely in modernity – about the Carolingians and their rule. By listening closely to our sources, we’ll see that the emergence of violence among the brothers during the civil war was not so much an anomaly as it was a revelation of a deeper truth, a series of events that punctured a bright, shining lie that the Franks has been telling about themselves (and largely to themselves).

Who is this book for?

For such a significant event as the Carolingian Civil War, it’s surprising how few books cover the topic in depth. Even more surprising is how well-written and accessible this one is—perfect for history enthusiasts, especially if you enjoy a sentence that is just “Whoops.” Historians of the Carolingians and medieval Europe in general will want a copy of this book.
