Introduction to the Carolingian Age
By Cullen J. Chandler
Routledge
ISBN: 978-1-032-12122-2
Serving as ‘an invitation to the study of Carolingian civilization,’ this book examines the political and societal changes that took place in Western Europe in the 8th and 9th centuries. It is mostly a guide to how this empire came about, the family that ruled it, and its quick end.
Excerpt:
I present a brief narrative introduction to Carolingian civilization, designed to meet the needs of those who seek an overview of the people, events, and prevailing social and cultural conditions of the period so that they can better contextualize and analyze other reading materials. The story will start with a prologue—an overview of Late Antiquity—followed by a first chapter addressing the Frankish world in post-Roman Europe and the Mediterranean in order to set the stage for the Carolingian dynasty and the social and cultural institutions of the early Middle Ages. Then it will pay more detailed attention to the period 750–900 over six chapters and end with a brief epilogue that considers the tenth century.
Who is this book for?
The author explicitly aims this book at university students and the general reader, giving them a relatively short (under 170 pages) but detailed overview of Charlemagne, Louis the Pious and the other cast of characters that ruled within the Carolingian empire.
