The Authors

The people at Hungry Minds gave us the story of how this book was created:

Hungry Minds began with a simple yet profound question: What would be left of humanity if it all came to an end? This idea took root during the early days of the COVID pandemic, a time when the fragility of civilization felt more apparent than ever. Co-Founder Vsevolod “Seva” Batischev and his wife, Onna, were on Naoshima Island in Japan, a serene haven known for its art museums. With the island eerily quiet and the hotel completely empty, the couple spent their days walking alone, surrounded by art, reflecting on an uncertain future.

In those quiet moments, they wondered what could be preserved if the worst were to happen. The pandemic had shown how something invisible could disrupt life on a global scale. Seva and Onna began asking what kind of legacy humanity might leave behind to guide those who came after. Onna, a musician, struggled with the thought that her art might not be practical enough to contribute to rebuilding civilization. Seva, sharing her unease, sought a different way to make a meaningful impact. This led to the idea of creating a book that could serve as a guide to rebuilding civilization, blending practical knowledge, cultural insight, and artistic beauty.

With this vision, Seva reached out to his long-time friend and future Co-Founder Timur Kadyrov. Sharing his sense of urgency and excitement, they began to brainstorm what the book could be. From the start, it was clear this would not be a dry manual or a traditional encyclopedia. It would need to resonate deeply with readers, becoming both a work of art and a source of inspiration. The idea was to create something timeless that captures the soul of humanity’s collective genius. Thus, the framework for The Book: The Ultimate Guide to Rebuilding Civilization was born.
