New Medieval Books: Hariulf’s History of St Riquier

Hariulf’s History of St Riquier

Translated by Kathleen Thompson

Manchester University Press
ISBN: 978 1 5261 5410 1

This translation explores the evolution of a monastic community from its founding in the seventh century up to the year 1088. Historians will find that Hariulf wrote about a wide variety of topics, from Viking attacks to everyday life of his fellow monks.

Excerpt:

Hariulf’s history of St Riquier is the proverbial sweeping narrative, depicting the history of his monastic community over a lengthy time span with a large cast of characters. In four very different books he describes the history of the abbey at Saint-Riquier in northern France from its origins in the seventh century until the closing years of the eleventh century. It is an intensely local work, but its detail illustrates themes essential to an understanding of the Middle Ages, for the aspirations and activities of those who devoted themselves to the service of God in the monasteries were influential across all society. Elites sponsored, supported and sometimes took advantage of religious communities, while those with modest means lived on their lands, sought alms from the monks and healing from the saints whose relics were often in their care.

Who is this book for?

Monastic chronicles like this tend to offer historians a lot of little bits that they can research. You can find some material related to the history of the Franks, the Carolingian dynasty, local politics in northern France, even a few pages related to the Norman Conquest of England. But its most useful when looking at how a monastery operated over centuries, which is valuable to historians of medieval Christianity.

The Author

Kathleen Thompson is a Senior Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Sheffield, where her research focuses on medieval France, including its aristocracy and monasteries.
