Medieval Eastern Europe, 500-1300: A Reader
Edited by Florin Curta
University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 978-4875-4487-4
This collection of translated sources delves into the politics, religion, law, and literature of Eastern Europe, offering insights into the lives of Magyars, Bulgarians, Rus, Czechs, Mongols, and other peoples who shaped the region’s rich history.
Excerpt:
Contrary to the common misconception, there is an abundance of written sources on the medieval history of eastern Europe. This book is meant to provide a helpful sample for students and other readers. Far from aspiring to cover eight hundred years of history in just 118 documents, my intention is to offer a glimpse into the variety of the material available and to supply sources that could complement textbooks and monographs used in history courses.
Who is this book for?
This book is primarily aimed at students taking courses on medieval Eastern Europe – it gives snippets of sources that would go well with classes on the development of states in the Balkans or the Mongol invasions of the thirteenth century. Those wanting to get an introduction to the region might find it also helpful, but nearly all of the translations can be found elsewhere.
