The Orthodox Academy of Crete and Medievalists.net are delighted to invite scholars and researchers to submit proposals for their upcoming online conference, “Re-Living Jesus’s Nativity in Late Antique and Medieval Christianity,” scheduled for December 14, 2024. This conference aims to explore the diverse ways in which the Nativity of Jesus was interpreted, celebrated, and represented from Late Antiquity through the Medieval period.
Conference Topics:
- Historical Contexts: Examination of the historical and cultural settings in which Nativity narratives were developed and disseminated.
- Theological Interpretations: Analysis of theological reflections on the Nativity and their implications for Christian doctrine and practice.
- Liturgical Practices: Study of liturgical celebrations and rituals surrounding the Nativity in various Christian communities.
- Artistic Representations: Exploration of visual arts, including iconography, illuminated manuscripts, and church decorations depicting the Nativity.
- Literary Expressions: Investigation of how the Nativity was portrayed in religious and secular literature, including hagiographies, sermons, and poetry.
- Social and Political Dimensions: Discussion of the Nativity’s role in shaping social and political identities and relations within Christian societies.
Submission Guidelines:
We welcome submissions from scholars at all career stages, including graduate students and independent researchers. Please submit an abstract of no more than 300 words and a brief biography (150 words).
