The present volume provides an accessible and up-to-date introduction to the the Book of Marvels, exploring the rich tradition of the imagery of marvels in the Middle Ages; the social and cultural implications of depicting foreign peoples and practices; and the role of copying and creativity in the production of these closely related manuscripts. After a brief epilogue reflecting on the contemporary relevance of medieval marvels, the volume ends with a series of plates that links excerpts from the text to their corresponding scenes in the miniatures, thus enabling modern readers to discover the manuscripts’ marvels firsthand.
