A collection of 12 articles in honour of Terry B. Barry, Professor Emeritus at Trinity College Dublin. The articles deal with a variety of topics related to medieval Ireland, including its places and settlements.

Excerpt:

We were both fortunate to have Professor Terry Barry as supervisor for our doctoral studies in the 2000s in the Department of History (formerly Medieval History) at Trinity College Dublin. It is an honor to edit this festschrift in recognition of his contributions to Irish medieval studies. Terry’s works have stood the test of time and in fact his theories from the 1970s and 1980s, not all of them provable at the time, are now being validated thanks to the technological advances that are becoming integral to landscape and settlement studies. Such reexaminations of his original concepts are apparent throughout the following volume. Terry’s influence academically is, we believe, clearly addressed in every single paper. He spent many decades studying medieval Ireland’s settlement, ranging from moated sites, to deserted villages, to tower houses. The impact of his research is amply reflected in the title and sub-headings of this volume as Terry never treated his studies of medieval settlement in isolation, but rather always framed them within wider contexts and debates in terms of the lives of the people of medieval Ireland.
