Two medieval items coming up for auction will probably be bought for a similar price. Which would you choose to have?
Apollo Art Auctions in London is hosting an event featuring ancient and medieval artworks on December 11, 2022. Over 500 items will be auctioned off, and two of them dating from the Middle Ages are both expected to sell for between £3,000 to £6,000.
The first is an iron sword dated from 1100 to 1300 AD. Called a ‘Knights Sword’ it measures 1250mm long by 700mm wide and weighs 1.42 kilograms. Formerly from an old Austrian collection, the item is currently held by a private collector in London. Apollo Art Auctions comments that this would be an Oakeshott Type F sword and its blade is in good condition. They add that the “sword is typical of Medieval swords that would have participated in the Crusades. Most Knights had this particular type, also known as ‘two hands sword’ as it was mostly held with two hands which gave it a lot of damaging strength.”
The second item is a horse figure which is an example of Tang dynasty art (618-907 AD). Measuring 700mm by 590mm and weighing 17.64 kilograms, it reveals the capacity of medieval Chinese workshops to produce life-like sculptures of animals. Apollo Art Auctions calls it “a beautiful pottery figure of a prancing horse. The spirited horse is shown with the right foreleg raised, mane swept to one side, mouth open, and ears laid back. The tail is depicted as docked and bound traditionally. Traces of red colour are visible on the hooves. The saddle is covered with a red cloth draped over the saddle. Below the saddle, there is a decorated cloth. The horse’s trappings are completed by an elaborate harness with dangling tassels on the horse’s croup.”
They are part of an auction featuring many historical items from Europe and Asia. One of the more expensive items is a 1000mm-tall Roman figure of Asclepius, son of Apollo and the god of medicine, which is expected to sell for between £20,000 and £40,000. Other items include a British medieval gold ring with a massive sapphire, a Viking gold twisted ring, and a rare and exceptional Roman silver bowl with an embossed, high-relief bust of Zeus.
