Writing the History of the Sultan Saladin

Writing the History of the Sultan Saladin

Paper by Jonathan Phillips

Given online at the Second International Seminar on Crusades and Military Orders on October 18, 2021

Excerpt: What I’m talking about this evening is a couple of different things: I’ve written this book on the Sultan Saladin, and I wanted to share some of the challenges that face me writing that book. But in a sense to also share a lot of the materials that I used in creating that book were I think materials that perhaps need to be aired a little more widely than just say the specialist press of people writing articles and academic-facing books on the Near East because I think as we look to develop our subject and indeed the SSCLE, what I’m interested in doing is drawing a wide range of people into our conversations about the crusades.
