Using the Past: The Middle Ages in the Spotlight
To be held at the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, in Batalha, Portugal, between December 10–12, 2020.
The conference aims at bringing together scholars concerned with the uses (and abuses) of the medieval past, and invites papers that address these uses in any historical period from the Middle Ages to the present. Some possible topics and approaches may include the following:
- Methodological Approaches: Terminology, Concepts, Categories.
- Academic Medievalism.
- The Reception of the Middle Ages.
- Contemporary Politics, Society and Mass Media.
- Tourism and the Middle Ages.
We invite participation from scholars of any rank, from graduate students, to senior scholars. Participants are welcome to present in English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, or Italian. Proposals for either 3-paper sessions or individual papers are equally welcome. Individual papers should be 20 minutes in length.
The submissions must include an abstract and a brief CV of no more than 300 words each. Please send to [email protected] by March 31, 2020.
