It is the 800th anniversary of the Charter of the Forest in 1217. From 1217, reissues of Magna Carta were accompanied by the Forest Charter. Up to this point, the crown had enjoyed exclusive rights over large parts of England. The Forest Charter re-established wider access for hunting, grazing, and fuel. This lecture uses the Forest Charter as a starting point to think about conflicts over access to common land in a long historical perspective.
