The Transformers and the Middle Ages

Having been a boy of a certain age in the 1980s, I was one of the many, many fans of the cartoon show The Transformers (confession – I still watch the show on occasion, and have a collection of the toys in a box in my basement). Now, as the fourth live-action Transformers film hits the screens, I want to take you back to when the Autobots and Decepticons went medieval!

“My dear girl, I find it hard to believe that my data bank dates your costume to 542 A.D.”
“Fashion is always a year behind Camelot out here in the countryside.”

During the second season of The Transformers, which aired in 1985, many of the episodes would focus on  a strange new locale where a few characters would have some sort of battle or adventure. In this episode, entitled ‘A Decepticon Raider in King Arthur’s Court’, the Decepticons Starscream, Ramjet, Ravage and Rumble are being chased by the Autobots when they stumble into a Stonehenge-like building. After pressing a few of the stones, they find themselves transported back into the Middle Ages – to the year 543 AD.

For the treacherous Decepticon second-in-command Starscream, this is a great opportunity to take over the world, since he is walking around on Earth over 1400 years before the other Transformers are around. However, two Autobots – Hoist and Warpath – have also found their way back in time, and they will prevent the evil ‘Giant Knights’ from carrying out their plan.

The two factions team up with human nobles – Sir Aetheling the Red and Sir Wagend du Blackthorne – who were feuding over cows that wandered into the wrong garden. The 22-minute show goes through a lot of what you might expect about the Middle Ages in a cartoon aimed at kids – we get to see a tournament, a castle siege, a knight trying to rescue a princess, a wizard and a dragon.  Here is one clip of the episode:

Starscream gets many of the best lines in the episode. To a team of men who were cranking his ‘electric dynamo’, he shouts “Faster, you malingering peasants!” and when the wizard shows up, the Decepticon tells him “Foolish human! Magic can never defeat science!” (the wizard proves him wrong).

As one would expect, good defeats evil, and the Autobots force to return to the Decepticons to return to the present-day. The sixth-century is saved!
