Kelly DeVries begins teaching at The Citadel

Kelly DeVries, a distinguished military historian of the European Middle Ages, is the new Mark Clark Distinguished Visiting Professor in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Citadel, a military college located in South Carolina.

“We are extremely pleased and honored that one of the world’s foremost experts on medieval warfare will spend this year sharing with our students and community his extraordinary knowledge of armed conflict and the medieval world,” said Keith Knapp, head of the Department of History.

DeVries holds a Ph.D. in medieval studies from the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto. Most recently he was a professor of history at Loyola University Maryland and Honorary Historical Consultant for the Royal Armouries, United Kingdom.

DeVries has published numerous books, articles and bibliographies on military history, medieval history and the history of technology for academic and popular historical audiences, including “Rhodes Besieged: Stone, Cannon, and Men, 1480-1522”; “The Artillery of the Dukes of Burgundy, 1363-1477”; “Joan of Arc: A Military Leader”; “The Norwegian Invasion of England in 1066”; “Infantry Warfare in the Early Fourteenth Century: Discipline, Tactics, and Technology; and Medieval Military Technology.”

He has appeared on more than 30 shows on PBS, History Channel, History International, Military History and the National Geographic Channel.

The Mark Clark Distinguished Visiting Professor, also known as the Mark Clark Chair of History, was established in 1982 in honor of Gen. Mark Clark, the 11th president of the military college and a war hero whose service in the U.S. Army spanned 40 years. During World War II, Clark was commander of Allied troops that liberated Rome in 1944. Interstate 526 in the Lowcountry is named for him as is Mark Clark Hall, the student center, on The Citadel campus.
