How to have a Renaissance Hairstyle

Janet Stephens, an amateur archaeologist and hairdresser, has been able to recreate hairstyles from historic periods. In the following video, she shows how to create a real Renaissance hairstyle from Northern Europe (Flanders 1520’s). Based on a reliquary bust of an anonymous female saint (probably one of the 10,000 virgin companions of St. Ursula) in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Includes a work around for shorter hair.

In January 2013, Stephens gave a poster presentation at the annual meeting of the Archeological Institute of American on the hairstyle of the Roman Vestal Virgins. Click here to see How to have a Roman hairstyle
