Bringing the Middle Ages to Life: Reenactments and Costuming

Lecture by Janty Yates and Scott Farrell, with Cait Stevenson

Given online by The Getty Museum on July 26, 2022

Abstract: The Middle Ages are very much alive today, continuing to inspire film, books, and historical and theatrical reenactments. But how do today’s creators interpret the medieval period to make it feel both real and relevant for modern audiences? In this online conversation, Academy Award-winning costume designer Janty Yates (The Last Duel, Robin Hood, Gladiator), Scott Farrell, founder and program director of Chivalry Today, and Cait Stevenson, author of How to Slay a Dragon: A Fantasy Hero’s Guide to the Middle Ages, discuss their processes behind creating vivid depictions of the Middle Ages, pursuing authenticity and historical “accuracy,” and melding the Middle Ages with elements of fantasy and magic.
