The latest issue tells the story of one of the most infamous figures from the Middle Ages – Vlad the Impaler, also known as Dracula.
As the editor of Medieval Warfare, I am trying to give readers new research and new views about the medieval past. So in creating an issue featuring Vlad III, Voivode of Wallachia, the aim was to give insights into what historians are now researching when it comes to his life and times. Thanks to my Assitant Editor, Alice Isabella Sullivan, we were able to recruit Albert Weber and Adrian Gheorghe, who are part of the Corpus Draculianum research project, to write the main articles about Vlad’s two most important campaigns. We added Andrei Pogacias to write a piece about the Impaler’s father, Vlad II, and his important role in Wallachia’s history. Alice also contributed a piece, telling about the post-medieval Dracula – how this figure went from a failed local ruler to the inspiration for countless movies, books and theme parks.
The issue has other articles too – we tell the stories of two very different warriors – an 11th-century English rebel known as Hereward, and the famed Castilian Archbishop Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada. It also tells you about the war games of horsemen in Asia, the defensive aspects of castles, and the beginnings of the study of medieval military history.
