Medieval Military Medicine: From the Late Middle Ages to the Early Sixteenth Century
By Brian Burfield

ISBN: 978 1 39904 093 8
Warfare underwent significant changes between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, bringing new challenges for those treating wounded and sick soldiers. This book explores how medical care evolved to deal with the injuries and diseases that accompanied these changes in warfare.
Changes in military technology, particularly the growing use of gunpowder weapons, had significant effects on medieval warfare, including the types of wounds and injuries suffered on the battlefield. This book explores how late medieval surgeons responded to these challenges, while also dealing with other medical problems, including plague, syphilis and psychological trauma.
Whether your interests lie in medieval warfare or medieval medicine, this book makes a valuable contribution to an understudied area of history. It offers a fascinating look at the medical challenges of warfare and how practitioners sought to overcome them. Scholars will also appreciate the extensive endnotes and bibliography, which make this a particularly useful resource for further research.
“Richly researched but easy to follow, Medieval Military Medicine is an excellent book for readers interested in warfare, surgery, weapons or everyday medieval life. It is informative, sometimes grim, but consistently absorbing.” ~ review from Canterbury Medieval Combat
