Ming-Dynasty China and the World Along the Silk Road: Volume 1

By Wan Ming

Routledge
ISBN: 978-1-032-67207-6

Across sixteen essays, the author examines the Ming dynasty’s diplomatic and commercial networks, tracing how the “Silk Road” linked China with regions far beyond its borders.

Excerpt:

The first part, an overall view presented in 16 chapters, examines the origin and development of the Silk Road in the Ming Dynasty from a holistic and global point of view. I believe that the Silk Road developed in the early Ming Dynasty with equal emphasis on the land and the sea routes, and I start the part with my paper on Fu An’s journey to the Western Regions that I published in 1990. In each chapter, I elaborate on all aspects of China’s foreign relations in the early Ming Dynasty and identify the “non-invasive” foreign policy in that age, which was to pursue the ideal of “shared peace,” quite different from the foreign policies of all the past dynasties.

Who is this book for?

These sixteen essays, all by a single author, draw together her research on the Ming dynasty and its connections with the wider world. They range across economic and political themes—from overland exchange along the Silk Road to the maritime ventures associated with Zheng He—offering a detailed picture of how Ming China engaged with foreign powers and markets. Published in translation, the book is also a welcome rarity for English-language readers: substantial work on this period by a historian based in China is still not as widely available as it should be. Readers interested in late medieval China, Silk Road networks, and early modern trade will find it an engaging read. More volumes of this book are expected.
