A new historical role-playing game is aiming to immerse players in the realities of late medieval Europe, allowing them to step into the lives of more than a thousand real historical figures from the era of the Hundred Years’ War.
Created by the Japanese indie studio Muzina Games, Crown & Coin: The Hundred Years is set between 1337 and 1453 and focuses on historical authenticity rather than fantasy. According to the developers, the game has already attracted significant attention, gathering over 4,000 wishlists within three days of launching its demo on Steam.

Rather than inventing fictional heroes, the game allows players to take control of real people who lived during the period. These include famous figures such as Edward the Black Prince and Joan of Arc, but also lesser-known merchants, mercenaries, and physicians. The developers say the game includes 1,015 historical characters in total, all based on historical records.
Historical events also shape the gameplay. Players can participate in the destructive chevauchées that ravaged France during the war, navigate the politics of the Valois dynasty, or attempt to alter history entirely.

“I wanted to create an experience where players can truly ‘live’ inside the great river of history and learn about it from the inside out,” says Akihiro Yoshizawa, the lead developer of the game. “For example, you can play as Jeanne des Armoises (the false Joan of Arc). To perfectly mimic Joan, you, as a player, must learn everything about her. But in doing so—in encountering Joan’s family, her childhood friends, and her unwavering faith—you might find yourself genuinely wanting to save her. You might stand up and shout, ‘That woman is not Joan of Arc! I am Joan of Arc!’ And perhaps Gilles de Rais, standing on the edge of madness after Joan’s capture, whom you befriended by disguising yourself as a minstrel and singing songs of the Maiden, will draw his sword and say, ‘She speaks the truth! I stand with her!’”
Yoshizawa adds “In this game, you don’t just read history; you live it, you learn the true stories of these people, and sometimes, you rewrite that history. Although my homeland of Japan has its own rich history of Samurai, I chose this era because, as a Japanese developer, I feel a profound respect and love for the lives, struggles, and the very essence of the Knights of medieval Europe.”
