Medieval World is an English, bi-monthly publication about the Middle Ages which was created four years ago as a continuation of Medieval Warfare by Karwansaray Publishers; a publisher of books and magazines – both digital and in print – based in Zutphen, the Netherlands.
Medieval World magazine strives to cover all aspects of the Middle Ages in an accessible way for an informed, international audience.
We are seeking a dynamic and organized freelance editor to commission and edit articles, manage the editorial process, and collaborate with our image researcher and designer to produce six issues per year. This role also includes creating and curating regular blogs, exploring podcast opportunities, and engaging with our audience on social media. This position reports to the Editor-in-Chief.
Tasks and responsibilities
As editor of Medieval World magazine, you will be responsible for the following tasks:
1) Editorial organization:
Develop themes, and topics for articles and other sections of future issues of the magazine.
Commission content from authors for themes and articles, as well as book reviews.
Commission original artwork, maps, and other illustrations.
Edit articles and other content for accuracy, flow of text, style, syntax, and grammar.
Write for the magazine, including the Editorial, occasional articles, and book reviews.
Request books for book reviews, and staying informed about new book releases.
Cooperate with our designer and image researcher on the layout of each article and the magazine as a whole.
Proofread the magazine and ensure accuracy in all aspects.
2) Promote the magazine:
Create informative bi-weekly blog posts on topics such as your work as editor, the latest issue of Medieval World, book releases/reviews, exciting news on the Middle Ages, museum exhibitions, etc.
Network: develop and maintain a network of authors, reviewers, illustrators, and mapmakers.
Contribute to the magazine’s social media channels (Facebook, X/Twitter and Instagram) and interact with followers.
Answer questions about Medieval World magazine through email and social media.
Think of and act on new ways to improve/innovate/market the magazine.
Your profile
For Medieval World magazine, we are looking for an editor with:
A broad knowledge of and passion for telling stories about the Middle Ages. In addition to your own area of expertise, you are willing and able to look beyond borders and think out-of-the-box.
Comfortable with public interaction, community engagement, and adapting content for different audiences.
A strong communicator who keeps team members informed and involved in decision-making and is not afraid to ask for help and/or advice. This is a remote, freelance position requiring availability for meetings via chat or video for a minimum of 3-4 hours per day, 3 days per week between 9 AM and 5 PM CET.
A hands-on person with a pro-active attitude who does not require guidance every step of the way.
An editor with a creative mindset, preferably with knowledge of or interest in visualizing history.
Degree or provable relevant experience in Medieval History, Medieval Studies, or a directly related field.
English speaker with native or native-level fluency
The editor of Medieval World is furthermore expected to:
keep up with the latest research, refining his/her knowledge of the field;
multitask and work accurately; o be organized, plan ahead, meet deadlines, prioritize and act as required.

Freelance contract: as a freelancer you will be able to divide your time as suits you best, and to work where and whenever you like. Our only requirement is that deadlines are met, communications are clear and open, and that our editor goes the extra mile during peaks in the production schedule.
