Tastes of the Middle Ages: A Food History – Dive into the world of taste, cooking, and diet in medieval Europe. Explore the key ideas that shaped the food history of both Mediterranean and Continental Europe. Along the way, we’ll uncover how these culinary traditions shaped people identities and culture.
Medieval Gender and Sexuality – An introduction to conceptions of gender and sexuality in the medieval period. Each week historian Eleanor Janega discusses the philosophical and societal underpinnings that shaped culture and relationships from the 5th to the 15th century.
We also have self-paced courses, where you get all the video lectures and material at once. They include:
The Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest – This self-paced course provides you with the resources and background necessary for understanding these pivotal historic events. It will give you multiple perspectives through both primary and secondary sources, as well as video commentary from the instructor to guide you through them.
Life in the Viking Age – The structure of Nordic society was unique in Europe during the Viking Age. In this mini course historian Terri Barnes will share how and why that mattered.
Myth Busters: Viking Edition – Vikings are everywhere in pop culture but how do we separate fact from fiction? Join historian Terri Barnes and learn about Vikings through investigating several of the most popular myths about them. She’ll set the record straight with the most up-to-date research and information available.
We also have a series on the Crusades that looks at each of the Crusades. You can sign up to get The First Crusade, The Second Crusade or The Third Crusade, or you can get the entire series as it is published: The Crusade: Sources and Studies.
