The Book of the Deeds of the Good Knight Jacques de Lalaing

Translated by Nigel Bryant

The Boydell Press
ISBN: 978 1 78327 651 6

A translation of a 15th-century account of a young knight from Burgundy. Jacques de Lalaing was only 32 years old when he died, but he had already become quite famous for his success in tournaments as well as his military career.

Excerpt:

The Book of the Deeds of the Good Knight Jacques de Lalaing, compiled as it is from a variety of sources whose prime purpose had not been to entertain but to record, may not always be the easiest of reads; but it holds rich seams of information to be mined, offering invaluable insights into the behaviour and thinking of the nobility in the late Middle Ages.

Who is this book for?

This is one of several chivalric biographies that have been published in recent years, which reveal the stories of knights from the late Middle Ages. Like the others, this work offers a lot for historians to read when it comes to jousting and tournaments, as well as medieval warfare.

Curiously, this same text was also recently translated by Rosalind Brown-Grant and Mario Damen in A Chivalric Life: The Book of the Deeds of Messire Jacques de Lalaing, which was also published by the same publisher.
