The Art of War in the Renaissance: Technology, Tactics, and the “Face of Battle”

“Time altereth the order of warre, with many new inventions daily,” observed one sixteenth-century soldier, adding that “the wars are much altered since the fierie weapons first came up.” In this talk, Clifford Rogers will place the Battle of Pavia in this context, explaining the general tactics of the day and how they related to what were then recent developments in the technology of firearms and of armor. Drawing on imagery from the items in the exhibition, he will also discuss the implications of the new modern weapons and tactics for the individual soldier’s experience of battle and the changing nature of military courage.
