Mosaic from Venice

venice mosaic

This mosaic was made in the first half of the twelfth century as part of a decoration at the west dome in the Basilica of San Marco in Venice. Made in the Byzantine-style, it was originally part of a scene showing Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended on Christ’s disciples. Below the disciples are figures representing the nations that each disciple converted. This head belonged to Mesopotamia. In 1867, the company which was restoring the Venetian church removed a few mosaics from the walls, in order that they be replaced with copies. This was one of the pieces.

You can now see it at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London,
